Prof. Bo Hu Li, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, China

Title: Smart Manufacturing Cloud — A Kind of Smart Manufacturing System in The Era of “New Internet + Big Data+ Artificial Intelligence+”

Abstract: The report is based on research &practice of authors’ team (Team of Research and Applications on Cloud Manufacturing) on Cloud Manufacturing since 2009. Firstly, the reading of the “New Internet + Big Data+ Artificial Intelligence+” era is presented. Then the brief introduction of the challenges and solutions of manufacturing industry around the world in this era is given. The report introduces the connotation of the smart cloud manufacturing and the architecture, typical technical characteristics, general technology framework, software technology framework, standard technology framework, evaluation technology framework, security technology framework, supporting technology framework in body of knowledge of the smart manufacturing cloud. Then the implement principle, and Chinese characteristics & benefits of the smart manufacturing cloud are described. A brief introduction is made on the cloud manufacturing technology, applications and industries around the world. Moreover, the discussion proposes that smart manufacturing cloud is an embodiment and extension of cloud computing in the manufacturing field, and it is an smart manufacturing system in the era of the “New Internet + Big Data +Artificial Intelligence +". A prototype of smart manufacturing cloud named as "Astronautics Cloud”(including private cloud, public cloud and international cloud) developed by author's team is introduced. Then, some application cases which have been successfully implemented of smart manufacturing cloud are given. Finally, further development of the smart manufacturing cloud are presented from the aspects of innovation system construction and the collaborative development of “technology, application and industry”. Among these, it should be strengthened that the deep fusion of new generation artificial intelligent science & technology with new manufacturing science & technology, new information science & technology and new technology of manufacturing application area to push the rapid development of smart manufacturing cloud.

Speaker Bio: Bo Hu Li is an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, a professor and PhD adviser of the School of Automatic Science and Electrical Engineering in Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA). He is currently the honorary dean of the School of Automatic Science and Electrical Engineering and member of academic committee in BUAA, and serves as the consultant of the science & technical committee of the China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation. In addition, he is the co-president of China Simulation Federation (CSF), a Fellow of the China Computer Federation (CCF), the president of academic committee in the national key laboratory on Intelligent Manufacturing System of Complex Product, the vice president of expert committee of Cloud Computing in the Chinese Institute of Electronics, the vice president of expert committee of China Industrial Internet Industry Alliance, a Fellow of the Federation of Asian Simulation Societies (ASIASIM).He is the co-chief-editor of the international journal “International Journal of Modeling, Simulation, and Scientific Computing” (IJMSSC) . He was the director of Beijing Institute of Computer Application &Simulation Technology and Beijing Simulation Center, the vice president of the science &technical committee of the Second Academy of China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation, as well as the dean of the School of Automatic Science and Electrical Engineering in BUAA. In addition, he was a member of expert committee of Automation Area and the director of expert committee of Contemporary Integrated Manufacturing System (CIMS) Subject in Chinese National High Technology Research and Development Plan (863 Plan). Previously, he served as a member of editorial board of the international journal “Simulation Modeling Practice and Theory” (SIMPAT), the first president of Federation of Asian Simulation Societies (ASIASIM), a member of the council of directors of Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS). In the fields of modeling and simulation and manufacturing informatization, he authored or co-authored 300 papers, 14 books and 4 translated books, and he also got 1 first class scientific award and 3 second class scientific awards from China State, and 16 scientific awards from the Chinese Ministries. In 2012, He got the SCS Life time Achievement Award(SCS Modeling and Simulation Hall of Fame) of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International(SCS)and the “National Excellent Scientific and Technical Worker” honorary title from the China Association for Science and Technology. In 2017, He got the CCF Life time Achievement Award of the China Computer Federation. His recent research is focused on cloud manufacturing, intelligent manufacturing, smart city, simulation of complex system, high performance simulation computer system.


Dr. Ram Sriram, Chief, Software and Systems Division, National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA

Title: Ontologies for Smart and Networked Manufacturing: Past, Present, and Future

Abstract: The early part of this millennium has witnessed the emergence of an Internet-based engineering marketplace, where engineers, designers, and manufacturers from small and large companies are collaborating through the Internet to participate in various product development and marketing activities. This will be further enhanced by the next generation manufacturing environment, which is being influenced by the recent developments in artificial intelligence. Agent-based interaction will become more prevalent in this new paradigm. Ontologies will play a major role in the success of this smart and networked manufacturing: both for knowledge encoding and for agent interoperability. This talk will provide a historical perspective on my three decades of work in developing ontologies in the manufacturing domain.

Speaker Bio: Ram D. Sriram is currently the chief of the Software and Systems Division, Information Technology Laboratory, at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Before joining the Software and Systems Division, Sriram was the leader of the Design and Process group in the Manufacturing Systems Integration Division, Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory, where he conducted research on standards for interoperability of computer-aided design systems. Prior to joining NIST, he was on the engineering faculty (1986-1994) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was instrumental in setting up the Intelligent Engineering Systems Laboratory. Sriram has co-authored or authored more than 250 publications, including several books. Sriram was a founding co-editor of the International Journal for AI in Engineering. Sriram received several awards including: an NSF’s Presidential Young Investigator Award (1989); ASME Design Automation Award (2011); ASME CIE Distinguished Service Award (2014); the Washington Academy of Sciences’ Distinguished Career in Engineering Sciences Award (2015); ASME CIE division’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2016). Sriram is a Fellow of ASME, AAAS, IEEE, and Washington Academy of Sciences, a member (life) of ACM and senior member (life) of AAAI. Sriram has a B.Tech. from IIT, Madras, India, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA.


Prof. Chun-Hsien Chen, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Title: Informatics Enabled New Product Design and Development

Abstract: In new product design and development, understanding and fulfilling each individual customer’s requirements has been recognized as a pressing challenge for companies across industries. Customer requirement management thus becomes one of principal factors for product development to succeed in the marketplace. Poor understanding of customer requirements and inaccurate assumptions made during the elicitation and analysis of requirement information have significant negative implications on design and manufacturing of the product in terms of quality, the lead time and cost. Traditionally, consumer market research has been performed to provide direction and support for product development functions. However, due to the increasingly volatile marketplaces where customer requirements change quickly, the needs of customers might have varied from the originally elicited set by the time the products reach the marketplaces. Hence, the recent wide-spread usage of the Internet by consumers for information exchanges has provided a means for product developing companies to elicit real-time consumer intelligence. To tap on the massive amount of information on the Internet, computational toolsets that can extract and analyze customer-related data will be necessary. In this regard, the future relevance of the research in design informatics has attracted academics with various backgrounds, mainly from the domains of computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, product design and innovation, and consumer intelligence. With respect to a holistic view of design informatics in new product development, key challenges and future research directions are identified.

Speaker Bio: Chun-Hsien Chen is Associate Professor (tenured), Director of the Design Stream, and Deputy Director of MSc in Smart Product Design Program in the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, He received his BS degree in Industrial Design from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, MS and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA. He has several years of product design & development experience in the industry. His teaching and research interests are in collaborative/human-centric/consumer-oriented product design and development, knowledge engineering, design sciences, engineering informatics and artificial intelligence in product/engineering design. He has more than 170 publications in these areas. Prof. Chen has served as a Technical Reviewer for National Science and Technology Awards (Singapore), National Research Foundation of Korea, and a Judge for Pin Up Design Awards (Korea), an Advisory Board member (Singapore representative) for ISPE (International Society for Productivity Enhancement), an Advisory Committee member for the Design Disciplines of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and various international conferences held in USA, Europe, Brazil, China, Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Prof. Chen has been appointed as Editor-in-Chief of Advanced Engineering Informatics (ADVEI), a SCI journal published by Elsevier, since January 2013. Besides ADVEI, he is an editorial board member of Recent Patents on Engineering, Heliyon, etc. He is/was a Shanghai Eastern Scholar (appointed by Shanghai Maritime University as an Eastern Chair Professor, 2011 – 2014), a Guess Professor of Tianjin University (since 2013), a Visiting Professor of National Cheng Kung University (2011), a Guest Professor of Shanghai Maritime University (since 2006), and Chaoyang University of Technology (2008 – 2010).
